The fan guards are metal the base is hard plastic and seems very durable. Plug it into an open USB port and your set. The top of the laptop gets very hot, especially when the temperature is hotter than 72 degrees in our home. It made me concerned for the well-being of the processor chip in my investment. I didn't have a fan in our home that would cool the laptop without being really noisy and too large for my desk. I researched many fans for this purpose, and finally ordered this one (actually 1 for me and 1 for my husband). I paid LESS than $15 (each) for it, and it is a super FANTASTIC fan! Compact so it doesn't invade my desk, QUIET (yay!!), the fan guard is made of metal (not plastic so it DOESN'T squeek), the base is sturdy, the fan oscillates or doesn't, plus it tilts up and down.
